Why we chose JK House of Grace:
When my mother-in-law Michele had major vascular surgery, my husband and I knew that she would not be able to return to the large Assisted Living Facility where she had been “just getting by”.
As a Registered Nurse who has worked in home health nursing and as director of nursing at an Assisted Living Community, I knew Michele needed more one-on-one attention and assistance. So after much research and referrals, my husband embarked on finding a residential care facility that could deal with Michele's increased needs. He visited about nine homes in total. Most facilities were very nice; some were even grander. But JK House of Grace stood out, not necessarily for its location or size of room, but for the owner, Maria, RN. Upon meeting her, my husband knew that this was the special place his mother needed if she was going to recover. With Maria being an RN and her expertise in wound care, we didn't hesitate to move Michele from the rehab center (where she was deteriorating) to Maria's.
A little background: Prior to her move to JK House of Grace, she was barely walking, barely eating, and unfortunately her memory loss at times was getting quite severe. Many of the things that she did a few months prior had become impossible and she was "slipping through the cracks" of the Assisted Living Community system.
In a very short time under Maria's care, we saw drastic improvements. Now mind you, my mother-in-law is a strong-willed woman of European decent. She also has a knack to charm just about anyone (especially caregivers) to get out of doing anything that she doesn't want to do! (Like eating and physical therapy).
Because of her persistence, Maria has slowly gotten Michele to eat again, not five course meals, but enough to sustain her and to enable her body to heal from the surgery. Michele is also walking again, with the help of a walker (something she refused to do just a couple months prior to surgery). Michele has been able make this progress despite her stubborn streak, griping and outright refusal at times. The care Michele is receiving is highly personalized to her needs and wants, always given with dignity and love.
I can tell you, that with my background and experiences, that care like this is unique. Maria's sense of pride is demonstrated by her simple philosophy.... making her residents better (not just sustaining them). The caregivers diligently carry out Maria's plan of care and have Maria available for back-up anytime there is an issue.
We take each day as it comes, delight in the good news but expecting setbacks from time to time. But I know that our family can rest at night knowing that Michele is in good hands. She looks so warm, cozy, and cared for.
